STEM and AVID

DMS Stem and AVID Programs

AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for success and ensures students are College and Career ready. AVID targets students who may need extra support in academic classes, help building their confidence, and help building organizational skills.  AVID students must participate in the AVID elective.  Students accepted into AVID will be given the option of waiving their Physical Education requirement to open a period in their schedule for the elective.

DeLand Middle School STEM: Although there have been changes to the structure of out STEM Academy over the years, the principle that every individual can work, learn, and accomplish more when supported by a community focused on positivity and the pursuit of self-empowerment still holds true for all students, and staff, who participate in it.  We will continue to provide our students with a high-quality educational experience that will better prepare our students for the rigor of high school, college, and careers.  The STEM Academy will keep the TEAM of teachers that has surrounded our students.  Students in the STEM Academy are encouraged to choose different pathways we have by selecting different electives each year, or they may decide to pursue a specific pathway and follow it all three years as each of our elective courses are offered for three years increasing in complexity and rigor as student progresses through the sequence of courses.  Our four STEM pathways will include Agriculture, Culinary/Hospitality, Computer Applications in Business, and Technology.  Students who are accepted into our STEM Academy will be given the option of waiving their Physical Education requirement to open a period in their schedule for a STEM elective pathway if there is space available.
